VW Polo Names
Where does Volkswagen get its unique names for its vehicles? There has been such speculation as to the source of the name “Polo”. Some people believe that it was in reference to the polar winds. This would keep up with the Volkswagen’s penchant for naming its water-cooled cars after winds and currents. However, other fans insist that it is a pun of the Golf’s name, as “polo” and “golf” are both words for upper class sports. The second theory has more weight due to the fact that the VW Polo model’s original derivative was given the name Derby, which like polo refers to an equestrian sport.
